Skyfire 0.9 Beta, the latest version of this highly-functional but free web browser for Windows Mobile and Symbian 60, has just been released. This update brings this browser to some new devices, and adds ties to some social networking services.
New support for WVGA and WQVGA screen resolutions means Skyfire can now be run on some of the latest Windows Mobile smartphones, such as the Samsung Omnia, HTC Touch HD, and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.
Beta 0.9 is also gaining support for displaying the contents of RSS feeds on the Start page.
Skyfire is best known for its ability to show streaming video in many formats -- from YouTube to Hulu -- but this latest version is better able to display large amounts of text, too. It automatically adapts the font size in large text blocks, so once the user zooms into the copy they can read it without the need to horizontal scroll.
In addition, the Symbian S60 client for Nokia E and N Series phones has been significantly reduced in size, and offers and improved installation.
Social Networking
The new version of this browser allows users to access several types of social networking services.
Those who have a Facebook or Twitter account can now import their news feeds and Twitter streams into Skyfire and publish their status to their friends. They can also share and publish any web address to a Facebook or Twitter stream directly from the Share menu.
Available for Free
Skyfire 0.9 Beta can be downloaded now at get.skyfire.com on a Windows Mobile or Symbian S60 smartphone, or the browser can be cross-loaded from a PC.
This software is free, but data transfer fees apply, and this browser uses quite a lot of data.
During the beta process, Skyfire Labs requests feedback in its forums or sent to feedback@skyfire.com.
