The latest smartphone being unveiled at this week's Mobile World Congress tradeshow is the LG GM730, which will be based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, but with LG’s own 3D S-Class User Interface.
The basis for this device will be Microsoft's mobile operating system, and says it has signed a special contract with Microsoft, allowing it to be the first manufacturer of a phone with Windows Mobile 6.1.4, bringing with it a new version of Internet Explorer.
On top of that, though, will be the S-Class User Interface. Built-around a 3D cube layout, this provides four customizable home screens, and the flick of a finger turns the cube from one to the next. This UI eliminates nested menus wherever possible, providing more direct access to features and applications.
"The combination of Windows Mobile and our new 3D S-Class User Interface will make the LG-GM730 the most functional and easiest to use smartphone ever created," said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Mobile.
A Popular Design
This smartphone will use a design that become common in recent months: a tablet shape with a large touchscreen. In the case of the GM730, the display will have a WQVGA (240 by 400 pixel) resolution.
The device will employ a 528 MHz processor and include 128 MB of RAM.
In addition, this quad-band GSM phone will offer 3G and Wi-Fi. It will also have a microSD memory-card slot, 5 MPx camera, G-sensor, and an FM radio.
As a Windows Mobile smartphone, it will come with a suite of entertainment and productivity applications -- music and video player, email, web browser, calendar and contacts -- plus access to a tremendous selection of third-party software.
More Details TBA
LG is essentially pre-announcing this device, as it is not yet revealing many details, such as when the GM730 will be released.
LG + Windows Mobile = 50 Smartphones
LG's CEO expressed strong support for Windows Mobile today. "This phone is a springboard for us. We will launch a number of smartphones this year; most of them will follow this same winning formula," said Dr. Ahn.
And Microsoft went a big step further, saying that LG will use Windows Mobile on 50 phones by by the end of 2012, with many of them running the just-announced Windows Mobile 6.5.
