The Palm Pre will debut first in the U.S., but it has just taken a small step toward its eventual European release: it is now listed on Palm's U.K. website.
This is only a preview page without any details on a release schedule, but it's still good news for those who are eagerly awaiting news on when the first webOS-based smartphone will debut outside of the U.S.
This group can take heart with Palm's promise that the Pre is "coming soon", even if that's likely a bit of an exaggeration.
The U.S. carrier Sprint will have a global exclusive on the Pre at launch, and Palm has refused to be specific about when the Pre will be available from other wireless phone companies. However, the company's CEO said last week that Palm is currently working with carriers in Europe, Latin America, and N. America.
More about the European Palm Pre
This is the second bit of news related to a European version of the Pre to surface this week.
A GSM version of this smartphones with the 3G standards UMTS/HSDPA was being quietly shown around this week's MWC tradeshow in Barcelona.
An Overview of the Palm Pre
The Palm Pre will be the first device to use Palm's just-announced webOS. This will be a multi-tasking operating system with a strong focus on the Web. It will be able to wirelessly synchronize a wide variety of data with online services like Google and Facebook.
The Pre itself will feature a sliding keyboard as well as a multi-touch-capable 3.1-inch display. This device will also be equipped with 8 GB of on-board storage, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.0 megapixel camera with LED flash.
As mentioned earlier, it will be available first from the U.S. carrier Sprint, who will add its mobile broadband service EV-DO Rev. A.
