Apple is going to officially unveil -- but not release -- the iPhone 3.0 system software tomorrow, and rumors and speculation about what it will offer are flying thick and fast. At the top of the list is copy-and-paste.
Duringa live taping of Diggnation, Kevin Rose said that cut-and-paste will be the centerpiece of the iPhone 3.0 update. Rose claimed this information is coming from a reliable source.
In addition to copy-and-paste,this new feature will extend to cut-and-paste.
This is a long wished for improvement, as the iPhone's competitors and critics frequently bring up that thisdevice is missing what many consider a very basic feature for a smartphone.
No Multitasking or Video Recording
According to Rose, iPhone 3.0 will not include another longed for feature: the ability to multitask.
Like the current version of the system software, Apple's own apps will be able to run in the background, but third-party apps will still close when the user switches to another.
In addition, iPhone 3.0 will supposedly not add support for recording video.
iPhone vs. Pre
Kevin Rose also says he was told by his source that the iPhone 3.0 will include all the featuresthat will be in the upcoming Palm Pre that Apple's smartphone doesn't currently have.
Even Rose doesn't know exactly what his source meant by this, and it seems to contradict the other information, as the Pre will offer multitasking and video recording.
The wait for the answer isn't going to be a long one, as Apple will unveil iPhone 3.0 tomorrow, March 17.However, this will not be the day the new version is released; instead, Apple will be giving an "advance preview" of what will be available later.
Although Apple calls it the iPhone Firmware, itis also the system software for the non-smartphone version of this device, the iPod touch.
