Developers hunting through the new iPhone 3.0 software have turned up evidence of no less than six upcoming smartphones, handhelds, and similar devices. Very few details are available, but the product code-names and numbers show two iPhone models, two iPod touch models, and two mystery models.
To understand the new product references, it's important to know that in the iPhone system software, Apple's original smartphone is known as iPhone1,1, while the most recent model is the iPhone1,2. Similarly, the original iPod touch is called iPod1,1 and the second-generation model is the iPod1,2.
In the new iPhone 3.0 system software that was released to developers on Tuesday are references to:
iPhone2,1
iPhone3,1
iPod2,2
iPod3,1
This seems to be a strong indication that Apple is planning two new smartphones and two new handhelds. Judging from the product numbers, the company seems to believe these will be significantly different from their predecessors.
Mystery Models
The just-released system software also mentions two other unknown devices:
iProd0,1
iFPGA
What these will be is a complete mystery, though some have been quick to say they are references to the tablet PC that Apple is supposedly working on.
According to unconfirmed reports, Apple will release a device in the second half of this year with a 10-inch touchscreen. This is expected to be either a netbook or a tablet PC.
If it's the second option, this will supposedly be a scaled-up version of the iPod touch rather than a scaled-down laptop running Mac OS X.
