There's a new rumor out about a netbook coming to AT&T, and it should be music to the ears of anyone who is interested in a very affordable laptop.
This carrier will release a netbook at some point this summer that will sell for an astounding $99. Netbooks are expected to be entry-level models that sell for less than typical laptops, but that generally means $300 to $500 -- one for less than $100 is unheard of.
This device will allow users to connect to this wireless carrier's 3G network. Presumably this is for web access and email, rather than voice service.
If this report is correct, this device will almost certainly sold with a contract, and AT&T will clearly be subsidizing the cost. A heavy enough subsidy would explain the very low price.
What operating system this device will run isn't yet known, aside from the fact that it won't be Microsoft Windows. This points to some version of Linux.
