MotionApps Demos the Gaming Capabilities of its Palm OS Emulator for the Palm Pre

Many Long-time Palm OS users were thrilled when MotionApps announced plans to release an emulator that will allow the Palm Pre to run legacy Palm OS applications. A new video from the company shows off this app's ability to handle advanced games.

The demo starts off showing the basic capabilities of this emulator -- putting a virtual Palm OS device onto a Palm Pre, which will run a new operating system called web OS.

Then it moves to MotionApps Classic running Astraware's GTS Racing Challenge, a high-end game. This demonstration goes off without problems, which should be welcome news to those who are looking to this emulator to bring serious gaming to the Palm Pre.

The main purpose of this video was to show off Classic's nascent support for sound. According to a statement on MotionApps' blog, "We have been working on getting sound support in Classic and have made some good progress. It is still early in the process and more remains to be done but we expect to make it solid in time for public release."

More about the Palm Pre
The Palm Pre will be the first device to use Palm's just-announced webOS. This will be a multi-tasking operating system able to wirelessly synchronize a wide variety of data with online services like Google and Facebook.

Gaming has emerged as a weak spot for the webOS. This platform is heavily focused on the Web, and third-party applications created for it are written in HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. This is going to limit the types of games that can be created, as developers need more powerful tools to create high-performance games.

The Pre itself will feature a sliding keyboard as well as a multi-touch-capable 3.1-inch display. This device will also be equipped with 8 GB of on-board storage, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.0 megapixel camera with LED flash. 

In the U.S. the Pre will be available first from Sprint, who will add its mobile broadband service EV-DO Rev. A. The GSM version for Europe and Latin America will have the 3G standard HSDPA.
