A Million T-Mobile G1s Have Sold in the U.S.

T-Mobile USA has sold over a million units of its exclusive Android-based device, the T-Mobile G1. This carrier hasn't made a big deal out of this announcement, possibly because it took it six months to reach this milestone.

Selling a million units in a single country is an achievement for any phone, but pre-launch expectations for the first Android model were very, very high, and the G1 hasn't lived up to these. And if T-Mobile had heavily publicized that its flagship model had hit the million mark after about a half year on the market, many would have surely pointed out that Apple's iPhone 3G sold that many its launch weekend.

Still, this smartphone has been working under some handicaps: it was launched only in the couple of dozen cities where T-Mobile's nascent 3G network was available. Since that time the carrier has made it easily available all across the U.S., but because T-Mobile is the smallest of the big four carriers there are still many areas where it can't be used.

An Overview of the T-Mobile G1
The T-Mobile G1 is a consumer-oriented smartphone with a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, a QWERTY keyboard, GPS, and Wi-Fi. It also sports a microSD card slot and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

What makes the G1 special though isn't the hardware, but that it's the first device running Android, an operating system that was developed primarily by Google. This has a highly-functional web browser, and includes tie-ins to a number of this company's online services, like Gmail and Google Maps. There is also a rapidly growing collection of third-party software available.

The G1 is also available now on T-Mobile USA's website, as well as stores, for $180. It can also be purchased in many Wal-Mart stores for $150, or on  Amazon's website for $98.
