There's nothing special about a phone that can record video, but the new iPhone expected to launch next month will reportedly take this to the next level and allow users to edit their videos.
Not surprisingly, the mobile version of iMovie will be much simpler than the desktop one, but it will supposedly allow users to clip out sections of the video they have recorded with the iPhone's camera and then share it with their friends.
Apple hasn't confirmed this, but inside sources are talking about it, and developers have seen some evidence of it while going through the early versions of the iPhone 3.0 system software that will be released this summer.
Video Recording, At Last
Although all the iPhone models released so far have built-in cameras, these have not allowed users to record video. However, people who "jail-break" their device can install video-recording software not authorized by Apple.
This is clearly about to change, because buried in the iPhone 3.0 system software is an app to record video. However, it appears that this will only appear on the next-generation iPhone, not the current ones.
More Details on the Upcoming iPhone
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is happening in early June, and many are expecting a new iPhone to be unveiled at this event.
Many of the enhancements in this device will come from its new system software, and will also be available to the current versions. This includes support for cut, copy, and paste, MMS. Stereo Bluetooth, as well as peer-to-peer gaming.
In addition, the next-generation iPhone will almost certainly support the 7.2 Mbps 3G network that AT&T is currently putting into place, doubling its download speed when connected to a cellular-wireless network.
There have been persistent rumors that it will have a faster processor. According to unconfirmed reports, this could be a 1 GHz chip from Marvell.
