Apple hasn't yet unveiled its next iPhone, but a fairly complete picture of this device has nevertheless emerged. The latest unconfirmed report even gives the scheduled release date for this smartphone.
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off on June 8, and many are expecting a new iPhone to be unveiled at this event. It won't be released at that time though. A reputable source has told the website Apple iPhone Apps that the release date will be on July 17.
What to Expect in the Next iPhone
According to information that has leaked out of Apple, the third-generation iPhone will be an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary model. Its feature set will be improved, but not dramatically so.
One of the most noticeable changes could be the display. This will have the same size and resolution -- 3.5 inches, HVGA -- but will allegedly be an OLED screen. This type of display uses less power and takes up less space.
The upcoming model will supposedly use roughly the same form factor as the current model. There is no sign of new form factors, such as one with the oft-requested hardware keyboard. Still, the Apple logo on the back will reportedly glow on the next version.
According to unconfirmed reports, the next iPhone will be based on a 600 MHz processor, have 256 MB of RAM, and a 3.2 MPx camera.
There will be two versions: : the 16 GB one is expected to sell for $200, while the 32 GB one will cost $300.
For comparison, the current iPhone 3G has a 400 MHz processor, includes 128 MB of RAM, and has a 2 MPx camera. There are 8 GB and 16 GB versions, which also sell for $200 and $300.
An Updated Operating System
Many of the enhancements in this device will come from its new system software, and will also be available to the current model. This includes support for cut, copy, and paste, MMS. Stereo Bluetooth, as well as peer-to-peer gaming.
In addition, the next-generation iPhone will almost certainly support the 7.2 Mbps 3G network that AT&T is currently putting into place, doubling its download speed when connected to a cellular-wireless network.
Its built-in camera will reportedly allow users to record and edit videos, and then share these with friends and family. And it will work in conjunction with the GPS to geo-tag photos.
The next iPhone will allegedly have 50% greater battery life than the current one.
