Nokia has released an updated version of its Ovi Maps application and service. This new beta version features several bug and performance fixes, as well as increased compatibility with S60 Feature Pack 1 (v3.1) and Feature Pack 2 (v3.2) devices.
Ovi Maps features 2D and 3D viewing, a points-of-interest (POI) database for over 200 cities provided by Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities, an integrated weather service, drive and walking directions, and a subscription-based features such as enhanced POIs and voice navigation.
Ovi Maps Player API
In addition to the Ovi Maps update, Nokia has released its Ovi Maps Player API. This is a framework for syncronizing and sharing location-based information to/from mobile devices to websites. As a dynamic layer on top of Ovi Maps, developers can extend the Ovi Maps application to even building applications and location-based experiences over the application itself.
The Ovi Maps Player API also contains a component which will enable any website that utilizes JavaScript to take advantage of displaying and interacting with the contextual information gleaned from the mobile device and Ovi Maps.
By using the Ovi Maps website, users can personalize content and content collections, and then share or sync these to compatible mobile devices.
