Apple May Be Prepping Less Expensive iPhone with No Internal Storage

The smartphone Apple is going to announce tomorrow will be less expensive than the current one, if an unconfirmed report is correct. Evidence suggests this model might be the first iPhone without significant Storage for music and video.

London's Financial Times is citing "people familiar with the initiative" as its source for this report. These unnamed people didn't say when the lower price will be, or give a description of it.

The current iPhone 3G is available in two versions:  one with 8 GB of Storage sells for $200, while a 16 GB version is $300. According to several earlier leaks, there will be two versions of the new model too: a 16 GB one that sells for $200 and a 32 GB one for $300.

But the story doesn't stop there. The Dutch T-Mobile's inventory system reportedly lists a third new iPhone with no internal storage, in addition to the 16 GB and 32 GB ones. It's possible this device will be Apple's new entry-level smartphone, but no pricing is in the system at this time.

An iPhone by Any Other Name
It's not clear yet what Apple will call it's latest models. The original was simply the iPhone, while the second-generation is the iPhone 3G.

It's possible this next device will simply be called 'iPhone" again, with the year added differentiate it from the original. "iPhone 2009" is how it is listed in T-Mobile's inventory system.

A dark-horse candidate is "iPhone Video." The new version will reportedly the the first with support for recording video, and it will also supposedly give users some limited editing capabilities as well.

According to leaks and rumors, the next iPhone will be an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary model. Its feature set will be improved, but not dramatically so.

It will supposedly have a faster processor, twice the Storage capacity, and a handful of other features, like MMS support.

As mentioned earlier, the announcement is expected to happen on Monday, but the release if the third-generation iPhone reportedly isn't going to happen until mid July.
