Nokia May Be Jumping Into the Netbook Arena

Just a day after Nokia and Intel announced that they are going to be working together comes word that the Finnish phone giant is going to produce a netbook.

Yesterday, Nokia and Intel released a vaguely-worded announcement that said they are working together on a new class of Intel-based mobile computing devices. These will combine the features of a laptop with the connectivity of a smartphone.

Today, an unconfirmed report says that Nokia has asked two Asian OEMs -- Compal and Quanta -- to make netbooks that could hit the market as early as the third quarter of this year.

Quanta will allegedly make a netbook based in Intel Atom processors, while Compal is supposedly working on one based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

At this point, it's not clear what operating system these devices will use. One possibility is Maemo, the Linux-based OS that Nokia has been using for its line of Internet Tablets for the last few years.
