Dell Reportedly Working on an Android-Powered iPod touch Rival

Dell is developing a pocket-size device designed to let users access the Internet but not make phone calls, according to a major U.S. newspaper.

This device will supposedly be about the same size as the iPod touch, but include something Apple's doesn't: a connection to cellular-wireless data networks.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this device will use Google's Android operating system and might run an ARM-based processor. This OS is available for free, comes with a suite of productivity and entertainment applications, and there's a growing catalog of third-party software.

It's a MID
The gadget described in this unconfirmed report is a MID -- a Mobile Internet Device. This means it will be similar to a smartphone but with an emphasis on portable access to the Web, without the ability to make phone calls.

One of the WSJ's sources says this model could debut as early as this fall, possibly through a wireless phone company.
