Acer May Be Prepping an Android/XP Netbook

Acer is working on a netbook that runs both Windows XP and Android that will reportedly be released next month.

Earlier this summer, Acer's CEO said his company is working on a version of the Aspire One running Android. According to a report coming out of Asia, this will be a dual-boot device, offering users either Microsoft's operating system or Google's.

This netbook will supposedly be released next month. Although Android is free from Acer to user, the company still has to pay a licensing fee for Windows XP, so this model is expected to cost at least as much as this company's other Windows-based netbooks.

What About the Chrome OS?
Android was created for smartphones, but several netbook makers -- like Acer -- have been looking into porting it to larger computers. Last week, though, Google unveiled the Chrome OS, an operating system especially developed for netbooks.

It's possible many or all of those who were considering putting Android on a netbook will switch their efforts to Chrome.
