Google Latitude Now Available for the iPhone

Google has just released a version of its Latitude service for the iPhone and iPod touch, allowing users to share their location with their friends.

Unlike the versions for other smartphones, this one is a web application running in Safari. Still, it offers the same core functionality: users can share their location, see the location of their friends on a map, and modify their privacy settings.

Apple requested that this be released as a web application in order to avoid confusion with Maps on the iPhone, which uses Google to serve map tiles.

In addition, because Safari now supports the W3C Geolocation API, this web app offers basic Search and Directions functionality with My Location.

Like virtually all of Google's services, this is available for free.

Google Latitude is built into the Google Maps software for other mobile operating systems, like Android and Windows Mobile.
