Apple Replacing Entry-Level iPhone with a New Version of the iPhone 3G S

When the new iPhone 3G S debuted in June, Apple took an unusual step: it held on to the previous version and offered it at $100. However, this won't be going on for much longer, if information leaking out of a wireless carrier is correct.

The iPhone 3G that's still in Apple product line-up has 8 GB of storage, while the iPhone 3G S currently starts at 16 GB.

An anonymous source has revealed that Canada's Rogers Wireless has begun shipping an 8 GB version of the latest iPhone to its stores. The heading of a leaked internal message makes the plan clear: "Rogers 8GB iPhone transitioning to 3GS".

It's not clear yet if the new version of the 3G S will sell for the same price as the iPhone 3G does now.

Apple's third-generation smartphone is an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary model. Its feature set is improved, but not dramatically so.

The "S" is for "speed," and the iPhone 3G S has a faster processor and a quicker version of 3G than its predecessor.

In addition, the current versions of this model have more storage capacity than their predecessors, support for recording and editing video, and a handful of other features, like MMS support. Still, iPhone 3G S has much in common with the current version. The outward appearance isn't significantly different, and the screen resolution remains the same.

This product is available in either a black or a white casing, and there are two versions: a 16 GB for $200, while a 32 GB model goes for $300, with a two-year contract.
