The Palm Pre comes with a sliding, physical keyboard, but not an on-screen one. A group of developers is working to change that.
The webpage dedicated to that project spells out the plan:
The Palm Pre already COMES with an on-screen keyboard. It works in portrait and landscape, in all apps, in all fields. This on screen keyboard provides a path to produce a fully functional on screen keyboard for the Pre.
The keyboard being referred to is the one to allow users to type in symbols and other characters that don't appear on the physical keyboard.
If full the alphabet can be added to the on-screen pop-up windows, it would allow users to type in landscape mode, and in portrait mode without opening the slider.
Making Progress
The developers are well along in their efforts, including releasing an early version of the software. However, they warn that this is designated "pre-alpha" and should be installed only with extreme caution.
For more information, visit this project's webpage on the open-source development site WebOS Internals.
