Despite reports to the contrary, the T-Mobile G1 will continue to receive system software updates.
Since it debuted last year, the G1 has been updated several times. However, several smartphone-related sites have recently questioned whether this first Android-based model will get an official upgrade to Android 2.0, which is expected to be released this fall.
Some of the doubt came as a result of a Tweet from Jean-Baptiste Queru, a Software Engineer at Google, who said:
As much as I'm hoping that it'll be possible to somehow continue updating the G1, I can't promise anything.
But the real basis for these doubts lies in the G1's hardware. Queru is one of many who has pointed out that this device has a rather small amount of storage for its operating system. This group is concerned that future versions of Android won't fit in the space available.
T-Mobile Responds
However, T-Mobile has quickly moved to deny these reports. This carrier has released the following statement:
We plan to continue working with Google to introduce future software updates to the T-Mobile G1. Reports to the contrary are inaccurate.
There's also a second reason for optimism: Google has already released a beta version of Donut -- the code that will be the basis for Android 2.0 -- and third-party developers have used it to create early versions of this operating system, which fit on the T-Mobile G1.
