RIM Acquires Torch Mobile, Developer of Advanced Web Browsers

Torch Mobile has been acquired by Research In Motion (RIM), and its expertise in mobile web browsers will be included in future BlackBerrys.

Torch Mobile is the company behind the Iris Browser, a free web browser for Windows Mobile, WindowsCE, and Qtopia.

According to a statement from the company:

Our team of developers will join RIM’s global organization and will now be focused on utilizing our WebKit-based mobile browser expertise to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the BlackBerry platform.

Good News and Bad News
This is good news for users of RIM's devices. In recent years the browser that comes with BlackBerry smartphones has improved, but it's still well behind the ones that are part of other smartphone platforms, such as the iPhone or Palm's webOS.

On the other hand, it's bad news for users of the Windows Mobile version of the Iris Browser. A Torch Mobile spokesperson made clear what's going to happen to these: "The company will no longer continue developing for Windows Mobile or Windows-CE."
