iPhone 3.1 and iTunes 9 Released

Apple has just released a new version of its operating system for its smartphones and handhelds. iPhone 3.1 has a few new features, including the ability to suggest apps users might be interested in. A new version of iTunes is out, too.

The most notable new features in iPhone 3.1 is called "Genius Recommendations". This looks at the apps users have already purchased and recommends others they might like.

Also, the new version allows users to buy ringtones from the iTunes Store and install them over the air.

In addition, there is a long list of smaller enhancements or bug fixes. Some of these are:

• Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
• Save video from Mail and MMS
• Use MobileMe to remotely lock an iPhone
• Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
• Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is activated
• Paste phone numbers into the keypad
• Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS

The new version of the iTunes desktop software includes a redesigned store, Home Sharing, and other changes.

Home Sharing lets users browse the iTunes libraries of up to five authorized computers on the same local network and import files. Users can even automatically add new purchases made on any of the computers to their own library.
