HTC Hero's System Software Update Improves Its Speed

HTC has released a software update for the Android-based HTC Hero. This update is primarily intended to improve the performance of this smartphone, rather than bring new features.

It makes a number of changes to improve the speed of the device, such as changing the way the clock on the homescreen works.

Version 2.73.405.5 of the firmware does add one new feature though: touching the screen will focus the camera on the area selected.

Installation
To download this update, users need to go to the HTC website for their own country. Those in the U.S. who have purchased the Hero through a grey-market retailer like eXpansys should go to the U.K. site.

It can only be installed from a Windows PC, and will erase everything on the device. Of course, in this case much of what is stored on the device is being pulled off of remote servers, such as Google's own, and Microsoft Exchange servers. This remote data will, of course, not be erased, but user will have to set up their device to synchronize with it.
