Verizon Getting a Redesigned Samsung Omnia II

Verizon announced months ago that it will be offering the Samsung Omnia II, and some people are wondering what the delay is. Apparently, at least part of it was a result of a small re-design of this Windows phone.

It will still have a tablet shape dominated by a WVGA touchscreen, but the D-pad has changed shape. Previously this looked like a 2D representation of a cube (see here), but is now curvier (see image at left).

An image of this version has appeared on Samsung's website, along with a few additional details about this model, like the fact that it will come with a 1500 mAh battery.

There is still no word on when the Omnia II will be released, as it has been marked "coming soon" for at least a month.

Obviously, this smartphone will replace the original Samsung Omnia in Verizon's product line up, and it will boast a number of upgraded features

It will have a 3.7-inch, WVGA (800 by 480), AM-OLED touchscreen, while the current model has a smaller, lower-resolution touchscreen.

The Omnia II will ship with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, and an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro will be released later. On top of this will be the second version of Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, which has been developed to make smartphones easy to control with a fingertip.

This device will have Verizon's fastest version of mobile broadband: EV-DO Rev. A. At this point, there's no word on Wi-Fi support.

In addition, this version will have a 5 MPx camera, Opera Mobile 9.5, and more.
