Take a Look at the New Version of TouchFLO that Will Be on the HTC Leo

HTC doesn't ship its Windows Mobile devices with Microsoft's standard user interface, but has created an alternate one called TouchFLO. A newer version of this will ship on the upcoming HTC Leo -- a version what will include some new features.

The Leo has yet to be formally announced, but some of those who already have prototypes have leaked virtually all the details on it, including its system software.  As a result, quite a bit about the latest version of TouchFLO has already come out.

One of the main purposes of this alternate user interface is to make Windows Mobile smartphones easier to use with a fingertip, as the original was designed to be used with a stylus. That's why HTC has included large icons whenever possible.

The latest version has a slightly redesigned main homescreen (see image at left) that still includes weather and event information, but adds three spots for user customizable shortcuts.

The TouchFLO UI also includes a number of additional screens that users can switch between with a flick of a finger. Each of these has a different focus, like e-mail, calendar, music, and so on.

HTC is adding a couple of additional screens in the next version. One of these is dedicated to Twitter, allowing users to both post tweets and read the ones posted by their friends (see image at right).

In addition, it has a screen for Footprints, HTC's system that lets users collect images, text, and sound, and then display them for future reference.

Coming with Windows Mobile 6.5
TouchFLO 3D 2.5 is expected to launch on HTC devices running Window Mobile 6.5. The first of these are reportedly scheduled for launch on October 6.

As mentioned earlier, among the first smartphones employing it will be the HTC Leo, which has drawn a great deal of attention with its cutting-edge specifications, including 4.3-inch WVGA screen and 1 GHz processor.
