HTC Desire Now Cleared for Release by Verizon

The FCC has approved what could be Verizon's second Android-based smartphone, the HTC Desire.

Remarkably little is known about this device, considering how close it appears to be to release. Even a rough physical description has yet to leak out, nor have most of the specifications.

Most of what is known comes from the product SKU, ADR6200VW. The "ADR" almost certainly stands for Android, and the "VW" indicates Verizon Wireless.

That second one is superfluous though -- the ADR6200 appeared in this carrier's product database weeks ago, along with the product name, HTC Desire.

An unconfirmed report says this model will be Google branded, which means it won't have HTC's own proprietary user interface for Android-based phones, but will instead use the standard UI.

Mostly a Mystery
In a few cases FCC approval brings out new information on a smartphone, but this isn't one of them, and virtually all the details are hidden by a confidentiality request.

Still, a second source was slightly more forthcoming; the Desire was also recently approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance, who indicated that it will have Wi-Fi b/g.

Aside from these scraps, the HTC Desire remains a complete mystery, a remarkable achievement in a time when product leaks are common.

With FCC approval, it could be released at any time, and the CTIA tradeshow in early October looks to be the most likely venue.
