Samsung and Sprint have just announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Moment; Samsung's first handset for the U.S. market that's powered by the Android operating system. It will feature a 3.2 inch AMOLED screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, optical joystick, and 800 MHz processor.
In addition to the HVGA touchscreen (320x480) and slide-out keyboard, the Moment is going to be equipped with mobile broadband, Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, GPS, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.2 megapixel camera for still shots and video.
A microSD slot will allow memory expandability up to 32 GB (a 2 GB microSD card will be included). It will also include a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The Moment will measures in at 4.6 x 2.34 x 0.63 inches and weigh 5.7 oz. The standard lithium battery is going to provide up to 5.5 hours of talk time.
The Android 1.6-based Moment will provide easy access to Google's mobile services: Search, Maps, Gmail and YouTube. The Android Market will make make additional applications, games and widgets available to Android users.
The Moment will also be equipped with Sprint services like Sprint Navigation, which provides turn-by-turn driving directions, and this carrier's exclusive sports applications.
This smartphonewill be able to handle just about any email thrown at it. Support for Outlook e-mail through push technology will be included, and the handset is going to offer access to AOL, Windows Live/MSN, Yahoo, and Hotmail email. For those who need to stay productive, the Moment will let users view Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
Pricing & Availability
Sprint will release the Samsung Moment on November 1. It will sell for $180 with a two-year service contract, and $100 mail-in rebate.
This device will require activation on a pricing plan offering unlimited data, which includes the Everything Data and Simply Everything Plans. These include Sprint’s Any Mobile, Anytime feature, which gives customers unlimited calling to any wireless phone in the United States on any carrier anytime.
