Nokia Loses Money and Smartphone Marketshare

Nokia did something last quarter has hasn't done in years: it lost money. Its share of the world smartphone market declined a bit, too.

Its revenue during the Jul-Sept period was €9.8 billion, down about 20% over the same quarter a year ago. Its revenue from devices and services was also down 20% YOY.

The company lost €426 million, or €0.15 per share.

Smartphone Shipments Decline
Nokia's share of the smartphone market was roughly 35% in the third quarter, at the same level as in the third quarter last year but and down from 41% in the second quarter 2009.

The company shipped 4.5 million N-series and 4.4 million E-series devices last quarter, down from the combined 9.3 million N-series and E-series devices shipped in the previous quarter.

When all types of phones are counted, Nokia shipped 108.5 million units, a decline of 8% year on year. However, it held steady at 38% of the total world phone market, no change in the previous quarter or the YOY quarter.
