AT&T continues to gain subscribers thanks to the contract with Apple that makes this carrier the exclusive U.S. provider of the iPhone. During the third quarter of this year, there were 3.2 million iPhone activations, the company's largest quarterly total to date, with nearly 40% of these for new customers.
This wireless carrier also saw growth from other smartphones -- ones with 3G and a QWERTY or virtual keyboard in addition to voice functionality. There were 4.3 million of these added last quarter in total, also the largest quarterly increase in the company's history.
These devices are important because their users tend to pay more for service. This company saw a 33.6% increase in Wireless Data revenues to $3.6 billion, more than double the company's total in the third quarter two years earlier, driven by increased customer usage of Internet access, messaging, and related services.
Revenue and Profits
During the third quarter, AT&T's growth in wireless and advanced wireline data services in large part offset declines in its voice, legacy data and print advertising products.
The company took in $30.9 billion in revenue, leading to a net income of $3.2 billion, or 54 cents per share. The company's revenue and profits were slightly higher in the same quarter last year.
