HTC Hero Getting an Android 2.0 Upgrade

Google officially unveiled Android 2.0 earlier this week, and Verizon has already announced a model that will use it -- the Motorola Droid. Not to be left out, HTC has promised an OS upgrade for the HTC Hero.

The company made this announcement on its Twitter feed:

The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.

Eclair is the code-name for Android 2.0, while Sense is HTC's proprietary user interface, which replaces the standard one. It has the same general look as Google's UI, but offers more homescreen panels, includes Exchange support, ads additional widgets, and more.

What New in Android 2.0?
The new version of Google's operating system for cell phones has some new features. At the top of this list is the ability to synchronize with Exchange servers, but the Hero already has the feature. This means that one of the biggest improvements for users of this model will be the new Navigation service from Google, which provides spoken turn-by-turn directions for free.

The web browser has also been improved a bit, though it was already one of the best mobile browsers available.

More about the HTC Hero
The HTC Hero is available in both Europe, and in the U.S. from Sprint. It's also expected to debut soon from Verizon Wireless and from AT&T early next year.

It has a tablet-shape with a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, Wi-Fi, 5-MPx camera, and a GPS receiver, but no hardware keyboard.
