Palm, Inc. demonstrated an upcoming development tool for webOS apps yesterday. This graphical tool has been designed to simplify the process of making software for devices like the Palm Pre and Pixi.

Palm webOSThere are already development tools for Palm's new OS, but Ares will offer a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface. It will allow users developers to create apps, test them, and submit them to Palm for placement on the webOS App Catalog.

The webOS has a focus on the Internet, and developers create apps in HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

Ares was demonstrated yesterday at the Open Mobile Summit in San Francisco. Palm says Ares will be available by the end of this year.

Calling All Developers
Palm hopes easy tools like Ares will woo developers to its platform. It's competing against other companies, who want the same developers to make software for their mobile operating systems, like Android and iPhone.

It is facing an up hill battle: there are currently 100,000 iPhone apps, 12,000 Android apps, and less than 500 webOS apps. Of course, Palm's platform is still new, and the company is still creating some of the tools developers need.
