T-Mobile was slow to get on the 3G bandwagon, but it has worked hard to catch up. By the end of next month, it will have HSPA service running at 7.2 Mbps all across the U.S., significantly increasing the speed at which users can transfer data.
After years of being behind its competitors in wireless data speeds, T-Mobile is actually about to move ahead of at least one its them. AT&T is in the process of rolling out HSPA 7.2, but won't be finished until next year, T-Mobile will have its entire 3G network upgraded by the end of this year. Of course, AT&T's 3G area is significantly larger.
Most of of this carrier's customers with a smartphone will be able to take advantage of this speed increase. All of T-Mobile's Android-based models already support HSPA 7.2 This includes the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G, plus the Motorola Cliq and Samsung Behold II. Two recent Windows Mobile devices do too: the HTC Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G.
Next Is HSPA+ then LTE
T-Mobile has already begun testing HSPA+ service, and intends to have this running in markets across the U.S. next year. This will give users 21 Mbps access, considerably faster than most of its competitors' mobile broadband. T-Mobile already has this service up and running Philadelphia.
And T-Mobile doesn't plan to stop there -- it's already planning the move to the 4G service LTE. However, it hasn't committed to a timetable on this.
