Palm May Free webOS Users from Limit on Number of Apps Installed

As it stands now, webOS users are only able to install a limited number of apps, no matter how much storage space they have remaining on their smartphone. An unconfirmed report says Palm is going to remove this limit in an upcoming version of this operating system.

Both the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi offer 8 GB of built-in storage, but most of this can't be used to hold software that's been installed on the device. Instead, these go into a small partition that's not directly accessible by users. This was done to prevent users from easily pirating software, but it's main result is limiting the number of apps that can be installed.

Palm is reportedly going to change this arrangement in webOS 1.3.5. This upcoming version will move installed apps out of the partition and into the main storage area, but put them into a folder that is automatically encrypted whenever the smartphone goes into USB mode. This will prevent users from making copies of the files, and distributing them without permission.

This change will allow Pre and Pixi users to use as much of the 8 GB of storage on their smartphone for software as they like.

webOS 1.3.5 has allegedly already been sent to developers, and is expected to be released to users in the coming weeks.
