Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 May Be Coming to AT&T, T-Mobile

Sony Ericsson is reportedly going to make versions of the Xperia X10 with support for AT&T's and T-Mobile's 3G networks, raising the possibility that this high-end Android-based smartphone is going to be released by one or both of these wireless carriers.

According to a list of specifications for this device that has apparently leaked out of Sony Ericsson, there will be two models for the U.S. market. One will support the wireless frequencies used by AT&T's HSPA service, the other will offer the frequencies used by T-Mobile USA.

• T-Mobile USA: tri-band 3G (900, 1700, 2100 MHz)

• AT&T: quad-band 3G (800, 850, 1900, 2100 MHz)

Both will supposedly offer quad-band GSM/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz).

Not surprisingly, this leak has set off a round of speculation that the Xperia X10 is heading to one or both of these carriers, this news can't be taken as conclusive proof of this.

If neither AT&T nor T-Mobile USA is interested in this model, Sony Ericsson could still be planning to sell it directly to the public. If this is the case, then it will want to offer support for the two largest GSM carriers in America.

The previous Xperia models -- which were based on Microsoft Windows Mobile -- were not picked up by any U.S. wireless service provider.

An Overview of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10
The Xperia X10 will be chock full of high-end features, starting with its 4 inch, WVGA+ (480 x 854 pixel) capacitive touchscreen. In addition, it will run Android on a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Another high-end feature will be the 8.1-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash and video support. This will offer face and smile detection, as well as image stabilization.

To set it apart from the competition, Sony Ericsson has built some special  apps for its new Xperia models, including one that can bring together messages from a variety of sources, including Facebook, Twitter, photos, e-mails, and texts.

The X10 will be a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) GSM worldphone. There will be two versions: one with the 3G frequencies used in N. America, including T-Mobile USA, and a second with the frequencies used in Europe, Asia, etc.

Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi g will also be included, and so will a GPS receiver and a microSDHC memory card slot.

Business users should be happy to hear that this Sony Ericsson model will have Exchange ActiveSync, in addition to support for consumer e-mail systems. It will also have an Office suite.

Pricing & Availability
Sony Ericsson had promised that this high-end model would debut "across the world" in the first half of 2010, and its U.K. division says it will launch in that country in February. Whether it will be released in other countries at that same time is not yet known.

Pricing for this model has not yet been revealed, and will certainly vary from country to country and carrier to carrier.
