RIM has promised to release upgrades for the system software on some of its smartphones, but the release of these has been somewhat slow. Many of those who are tired of waiting have the option to install an unofficial version of BlackBerry OS 5.
This un-authorized OS upgrade is available for the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Curve 8900.
Installing this upgrade will bring these device even with the most recent models from RIM, including the BlackBerry Storm2 and BlackBerry Bold 9700. RIM has already released an official upgrade for the original BlackBerry Storm.
The Unofficial Upgrade
Version 5.0.0.411 can be download from the following links:
At this point, there isn't a system software upgrade available for the BlackBerry Tour -- official or unofficial.
What's new in BlackBerry OS 5.0?
The general goal of BlackBerry OS 5 seems to be to make devices running it look more like the BlackBerry Storm. At the very least, it has a more polished appearance than BlackBerry 4.6. This includes changes like inertial scrolling, spin boxes to set times and dates.
In addition, the web browser offers improved handling of JavaScript and CSS.
