If the Synaptics vision of the future smartphone is to be believed, consumers will be squeezing, tugging, and tilting their device to operate it, rather than merely swiping a finger across the touchscreen. This is evident by the Fuse, a concept phone created by Synaptics and an international collaboration of interface manufacturers.
While not set for mass production, the Fuse will be on display at CES 2010 to showcase the latest touchscreen and interface technologies, and how they all may blend together for the coming generations of smartphones.
A Very Hands-On Device
A notable feature is grip sensing. The Fuse is surrounded with touch sensors, meaning users are able to squeeze and caress the phone to execute simple navigation tasks, such panning, scrolling and resetting.
In addition, the fuse features the latest in tilt-recognition and multi-touch technology, and includes on-screen 3-D navigation with sensory feedback on a high-resolution, 480-by-800-pixel AM-OLED display.
Also of note is a touchpad on the back of the device for simple controls. This allows users to plot through the phone’s menus while still having a full, unobstructed view of the screen.
Check It Out
The Fuse will be on full display in early January at CES 2010 at the Synaptics booth, South 4 35364MP.
The other partners in the Synaptics collaborative include Texas Instruments Incorporated, The Astonishing Tribe (Swedish UI manufacturer), and “Interaction Consultants” TheAlloy.
