Slider phones like the Motorola Droid, Nokia N900, and many other present special problems for case designers. OtterBox has announced its new Tandem series, which has been designed with protect sliders without making them too bulky.
This upcoming collection of cases will offer two custom-fit shells -- one will be attached to the front of the smartphone and the second shell to the back. Silicone around the outside edges of the case will offers protection against bumps, while the polycarbonate shells will be able to withstand light impact.
There will also be an adhesive screen over the display to shield it against scratches. However, because of the necessary two-piece design, it won't have significant protection from water.
Coming to a Pre Near You
OtterBox announced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show that the first Tandem case will be for the Palm Pre.
"We've finally put rubber to the road with the concept of a case for a slider phone and the Palm Pre was just the right place to start," Curt Richardson said, OtterBox CEO. "The Tandem Series is a completely new design for us and we have spent significant time and effort to offer not only protection, but functionality."
This company isn't stopping there: company representatives at CES promised that a version for the Motorola Droid will be available soon.
