Google Nexus One Sales Expected to be Strong, but Well Behind the iPhone's

The Google Nexus One is the hottest new Android phone, and a market analyst has come with a prediction that over 5 million of these devices will sell in 2010. That number is dwarfed by another analyst's predictions for Apple iPhone sales, though.

Doug Anmuth from Barclays Capital predicts that Google will sell between 5 and 6 million Nexus One units by the end of the year. That will bring in between $2.6 billion and $3.2 billion in revenue.

These figures include sales through T-Mobile USA, who is offering this smartphone now, and Verizon Wireless, who is going to pick it up in the spring.

Sales of the Nexus One should make Google a significant player in the smartphone market this year, but it's still likely to be well behind the top dog in this market, Apple.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates that U.S. iPhone sales in 2010 will be around 16 million, and global sales will reach 36 million. That's a significant increase over the 2009 figures, 11 million and 26 million, respectively.

Munster's prediction does not include the iPhone sales by Verizon, which unconfirmed reports say will start offering this smartphone this summer.
