Samsung Moment Gets a Small System Software Update

Sprint has introduced an update for the system software on the Samsung Moment. This isn't the promised upgrade to Android 2.0, but it does bring a number of small improvements.

This update, the CL14 Maintenance Release, adds network-assisted GPS, which will allow this smartphone to get a fix on its location when it is indoors.

In addition, it includes updated versions of several of Sprint's bundled applications, including Visual Voicemail, NFL, NASCAR, and Sprint TV.

Sprint also promises this will improve the battery life of the Moment.

Installation
Currently, the CL14 can only be installed at a Sprint retail location with a Repair Center, which is very unusual for an Android-based device, which are usually delivered over-the-air.

Still, this carrier promises that a version that can be downloaded and installed directly on the Moment will be available in the near future. To check on the status of this release, go to the Sprint support website.

An Overview of the Samsung Moment
This smartphone Moment is a slider, with an HVGA touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. One of the things that sets this new device apart from the pack is its AM-OLED display, a type that uses less power and offers better colors at wider viewing angles.

The Moment still has Android 1.6, but an upgrade to the 2.0 version of Google's operating system has been promised.

In addition, this smartphone is equipped with Sprint's mobile broadband service, Wi-Fi, and Stereo Bluetooth.

A microSD slot allows storage of up to 32 GB of files (a 2 GB microSD card is included), and this device also includes a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, an accelerometer, GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel camera for still shots and video.
