The Mozilla Foundation has released Firefox for Mobile 1.0 for Nokia's Maemo 5 operating system. This allows fans of the desktop version of this web browser to enjoy much the same experience on their Nokia N900.
Its developer calls it "this most modern Mobile Web browser available", and it supports HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as tabs and location-aware browsing.
Users of the desktop version should be pleased to hear that Firefox for Mobile offers Weave Sync, which synchronizes tabs, history, bookmarks, and passwords between the desktop and mobile versions.
Bring on the Add-Ons
Firefox is the first Mobile Web browser to support add-ons. With these, users can customize the app by adding features like AdBlock Plus, URL Fixer, TwitterBar, language translators, and geo guides.
The most notable of these add-ons is YouTube Enabler, which allows users to watch YouTube videos. The Mozilla Foundation had hoped to include full Adobe Flash support, but decided not to, citing poor performance of its plug-in.
Get It Now
To download Firefox for Mobile 1.0 for Maemo 5, go to Firefox.com/mobile. This browser is free.
The Mozilla Foundation is also working on versions for a couple of other smartphone platforms. The Windows Mobile version is currently at the Alpha stage, while the Android OS one is still pre-alpha.
