HTC Prepping Two Android-Powered Smartphones: Legend and Desire

HTC is one of the world's leading makers of devices running Google's mobile operating system, and this company is using this year's Mobile World Congress to unveil two additional models, the HTC Legend and the HTC Desire.

These will run Android OS 2.1 and have a new version of the Sense user interface.

HTC LegendHTC Legend
This model is going to be the successor to the popular HTC Hero. It will have a redesigned shape without the hard angles, and much of its casing has been milled from a single block of aluminum.

The Legend will have a 3.2-inch, HVGA, capacitive touchscreen, and will be one of this company's first with an AM-OLED display. Below this will be an optical trackpad.

It will have a faster processor than its predecessor -- 600 MHz -- with 256 MB of RAM and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage.

This HTC model will be a GSM phone with 3G mobile broadband, Wi-Fi b/g, and Bluetooth 2.1. This model will also sport a GPS receiver and an FM transmitter.

In addition, this smartphone will include a 5 megapixel camera, 1300 mAh battery, 3.5 mm headset jack, compass, and G-sensor.

HTC Desire
The second Android-powered model being unveiled today is the HTC Desire. This may seem familiar to many people, as it is going to be a version of the Google Nexus One.

What will set these models apart will be HTC Sense, this company's alternate user interface which isn't included with Google's version.

HTC DesireAside from this, though, they will be practically identical: a tablet shape dominated by a 3.7-inch, WVGA, AM-OLED display.

The Desire will be powered by a 1 GHz processor, and sport 512 MB RAM and a microSD memory card slot.

It will also include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, compass, and an array of other features.

New Version of HTC Sense
As mentioned earlier, both of these models will debut with a new version of the HTC Sense user interface.

This extends the standard one and brings in new features, but doesn't radically remake it.

The next version is going to include a new feature called FriendStream, designed to help users keep track of their closest friends. It will bring together posts made to the most popular social networking services -- Facebook, Twitter, Flikr, etc.

The updated HTC Sense will also include some new widgets, including an agenda view for the calendar, and another that can display multiple e-mails.

Coming to Europe this Spring
HTC says that the HTC Legend will be released in Europe in March, while the HTC Desire will debut in that same continent in April. This company did not say when, or if, these smartphones will be introduced in other parts of the world.

It also declined to talk about pricing.
