Opera Mini Heading for the iPhone, IF Apple Approves It

Opera Software is going to demo a version of the Opera Mini web browser for Apple's iPhone OS next week. But there are questions about whether this app will ever be released.

This browser is already available for many other types of phones, and uses proxy servers to reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent to the mobile device. This often results in Opera Mini having faster performance than its rivals.

That doesn't mean it's lacking in features, though. For example, this browser offers tabs, Speed Dial, and a password manager.

What Will Apple Say?
Opera Software is going to do a demonstration of Opera Mini for the iPhone at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow next week, but it's possible it will never reach customers' hands.

All software for this smartphone has to be approved by Apple, and this company hasn't always approved apps that would compete with apps that are bundled with the iPhone OS. As Opera Mini will most certainly compete with the Safari browser, there's room for question on whether it will get Apple's seal of approval.

In addition to the demonstration of this potential iPhone browser, Opera Software also plans to release at the MWC show: 

• Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 on Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile handsets
• Opera Mobile 10 beta running on Android handsets
• Opera Mini 5 beta, running on a variety of handsets and platforms
• Opera's cross-platform Widgets Manager beta, running on Windows Mobile and S60 handsets
