Google Earth Now Available for the Android OS

A version of Google Earth has been released for smartphones running Google's own Android OS. This  free app acts as a sort of "virtual globe", allowing users to look at satellite images from around the world.

It takes advantage voice recognition capabilities of the Android platform, so just saying "Eiffel tower" can bring up the appropriate location.

This version of Google Earth also includes a roads layer, which layers road labels on top of the satellite imagery, helping the user to better understand what they are looking at.

In allows users to find local businesses or attractions, or learn more about about prominent places in the world.

Availability
This app requires Android OS 2.1, so it is currently only available for the Google Nexus One. However, OS 2.1 upgrades for a range of models are expected in the coming weeks.

Google Earth is in the on-device Android Market now. Like most of this company's software, it is available for free.

This isn't the first mobile version of this app to be released -- one comes pre-installed on all iPhone OS devices.
