Palm's webOS 1.4 Upgrade Could Debut Today

Users of Palm's webOS-based smartphones may get the long-awaited webOS 1.4 upgrade today, or its release may have been pushed back. This will bring support for video recording to the Palm Pre and Pixi, and bring Adobe Flash support a big step closer.

Sprint announced on its official forums that the version 1.4 upgrade will out out today, and listed the changes that will be included in it.

This post was later removed, so it's possible the release has been pushed back. Nevertheless, Palm has promised webOS 1.4 will be introduced in February, so the company is working under a deadline.

Big Changes
This new version will bring a number of long-awaited improvements, with support for recording video near the top of the list. Until now, users of the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus have been limited to using the camera only for pictures.

But the feature that has drawn the most attention is support for the Flash Player that will be available in the near future. When available, this app will allow users to watch streaming video, play games, and use websites that employ Flash for navigation.

However, Flash 10.0 will only be for the Pre series, not for the Palm Pixi models.

webOS 1.4 will lay the groundwork, but Flash won't actually be available until a Flash Player is released by Adobe. Palm says this is expected to be in the official App Catalog "shortly".

The webOS 1.4 changelog that Sprint posted in its forums revealed a number of other improvements.

Bug Fixes:

• Time Zone bug fixed
• Network time sync bug fixed to reflect accurate Network time
• Bluetooth car-kit transition to device corrected
• No EV icon bug fixed (random)
• Random browser formatting bugs fixed
• Fixed bug that incorrectly displayed Sprint when actually was Digital Roaming
• Missing Contact issue specifically with swap down to 1.2.9.1 or less
