First 32 GB microSD Cards Now Available from SanDisk

Flash memory device maker SanDisk has begun shipping a 32 GB microSD card, which currently is the highest capacity removable memory card available for smartphones and other mobile devices.

SanDisk claims the 32GB microSD card can hold enough music to last 35 round-trip cross-country flights without repeating a song.

"With the large volume of photos, videos and music that consumers create and carry around, a high-capacity memory card is a must-have component of today's smartphone," said Sanjay Mehrotra, president and chief operating officer, SanDisk.

Priced $200 at launch, the 32 GB microSD cards are based on third-generation 32nm X3 (3-bit-per-cell) technology and is available to both consumers and manufacturers for device integration. In working with device makers, SanDisk claims the new SD cards will be made available in a variety of card and adapter configurations and with the option to include preloaded custom software.

The 16 GB microSD card was previously the highest capacity storage card for mobile devices and is now available on Amazon.com for less than $50.

microSD cards are  about a quarter the size of standard SD cards and are compatible with many mobile devices, including Android smartphones.

The cards being used now use the SDHC (High Capacity) format, which tops out at 32 GB. This is in the process of being phased out by SDXC, which can support card sizes up to 2 TB, though 64GB SD cards are the highest capacity cards currently available.
