Samsung Outs Android-Powered Galaxy S with Super AMOLED Screen

At the CTIA tradeshow, Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S, an Android OS 2.1-powered smartphone that will sport a 4-inch Super AMOLED Touchscreen and 1 GHz processor.

Samsung calls the Galaxy S part of a “new class of smartphones that will maximize user experiences.” Key to that goal may be HD content as the Galaxy S will feature a 5-megapixel camera, the ability to shoot 720p video, and support a number of HD video formats for its 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Super AMOLED screen.

Super AMOLED screens are thinner than standard AMOLED screens, allowing for faster touch response and greater viewing angles. The Galaxy S monitor shares the same display technology that debuted with the Samsung Wave announced at Mobile World Congress in February.

In addition, the Galaxy S will have Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi capability. It will also come with either 8 GB or 16 GB of on-board memory, expandable to 32 GB with an external memory card.

No word from Samsung on carriers or pricing.

The Smart Life and Other Tech
Samsung also touted a host of proprietary technologies the Galaxy S will feature, including the Layar Reality Browser for augmented reality, advanced location based-services, and the Social Hub, which allows constant social network connectivity.

During his keynote address, Samsung’s president of mobile communications business, J.K. Shin, announced both the Galaxy S, and the Smart Life concept that it exemplifies. “Smart Life is delivering a smartphone experience that is simple, organized and integrated,” he said. ” And Smart Life is flexible and versatile, allowing smartphone users to customize their user experience to fit their own needs.”

Pricing & Availability
The Samsung Galaxy S is going to be available in the U.S. later this year. Exactly when this is going to  be, and what carriers are going to offer it, is not yet known.
