Motorola Cliq Gets a System Software Update

A system software update is available for the Motorola Cliq, an Android-based smartphone from T-Mobile USA. While it has a number of improvements, it does not upgrade the Cliq with a new version of Google's Android OS.

Some of the more notable improvements in the newly released firmware 1.4.8 include better battery life and increased sensitivity to the touchscreen.

It also offers enhanced support for Bluetooth: users can now listen to visual voicemail with a wireless headset, and the phone will work more closely with car kits.

The update includes newer versions of Google applications such as Maps, Talk, YouTube and Market, among others. The version of Quickoffice that's bundled with the smartone is also updated with support for viewing documents in Microsoft Office 2007.

Other Enhancements
Version 1.4.8 has improved audio quality for voice calls in some situations and faster GPS performance. In addtion, it adds support for .WMA and .WAV to the Cliq.

According to Motorola, it also offers better overall stability, so the device is less likely to become unresponsive or have applications quit unexpectedly.

Installation
Motorola encourages all Cliq owners to download and install firmware version 1.4.8.

To download, it's a two-step process. Go to Settings, choose About Phone and then select System Updates. Download and install the update. Once the smartphone has re-started, repeat the process.

Installing the latest version of the Motorola Cliq's system software will not erase data applications stored on it.
