Update: According to Opera Software, the Opera Mini for iPhone was downloaded more than 1 million times on the first day it was available, and is currently the No. 1 title in every App Store.
Apple surprised many by approving the Opera Mini web browser for Apple's iPhone OS.
Some had questioned whether the app would get Apple's stamp of approval because it competes with Safari, but the fears proved groundless and this app is now available on the official App Store.
More about Opera Mini
The browser uses proxy servers to reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent to the mobile device, which often results in Opera Mini having faster performance than its rivals.
Speed doesn't mean it's lacking in features, though. For example, Opera Mini still offers tabs, Speed Dial and a password manager.
Availability
Opera Mini is available for free from the App Store on the iPhone and iPod touch. It can also be downloaded through the iTunes desktop application.
“This app is another step toward Opera's goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places," said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software. The browser is already available for many other types of phones.
