Adobe Flash for Android OS and webOS Delayed Again

UPDATE: An Adobe spokesperson says that a recent comment from CEO Shantanu Narayen was misinterpreted, and the Android OS version of Flash Player 10.1 will be available in the first half of this year, as previously promised.

Adobe Says Flash Player for Android OS on Track to Launch by the End of June

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen said that Flash Player 10.1 for Google Android OS and Palm webOS won't be released until the second half of the year, many months after the original timetable. A version for BlackBerry smartphones will be available around the same time.

Last October, Adobe was confident that the release of the software was just around the corner, and promised a beta version for the webOS by year's end and for Android and Symbian in early 2010. In November, however, the company extended the release date and said that the webOS and Android versions would be out in the first half of the year. Now, Flash Player 10.1's unveiling has been pushed back again.

In years past, Adobe has tried to get Flash support onto smartphones with scaled down versions, but not anymore. The full version of Flash Player 10.1 will be for desktops running Windows or Mac OS X, as well as for webOS and Android, and eventually BlackBerry.

It will support sites that use Flash for navigation, as well as Flash video.

The software will take advantage of the capabilities of the devices it is running on, from multi-touch screens to Graphics Processing Units.
