Adobe Says Flash Player for Android OS on Track to Launch by the End of June

Serge Jespers, an Adobe platform evangelist, said that a recent comment from CEO Shantanu Narayen was misinterpreted, and the Android OS version of Flash Player 10.1 will be available in the first half of the year, as previously promised.

Last week, Narayen said that companies like Google, Research In Motion (RIM), and Palm will be releasing models with a mobile version of the Flash Player in the second half of the year. This was widely interpreted to mean that the Flash Player software won't be out until around the same time.

However Jespers said that Narayen was referring to new smartphones being released with this software pre-installed, and the public will be able to download Flash Player 10.1 onto their current devices during the first half of the year.

Jespers specifically mentioned the version for Android OS, but also referenced other unspecified mobile devices, which might include the webOS and possibly the BlackBerry OS, two platforms that Adobe has previously said are getting versions of this software.

In past years, Adobe has tried to get Flash support onto smartphones with scaled down versions, but not anymore. The full version of Flash Player 10.1 will be for desktops running Windows or Mac OS X, as well as for webOS and Android, and eventually BlackBerry.

It is going to support sites that use Flash for navigation, as well as Flash video.

The software will take advantage of the capabilities of the devices it is running on, from multi-touch screens to Graphics Processing Units.
