Google's Free Navigation Service Coming to the iPhone

At an event launching the Android OS version of Google Navigation in the U.K., it was announced that the turn-by-turn navigation service is going to be available for Apple's iPhone. The line of smartphones already includes Google's mapping software, but its navigation app acts more like a stand-alone GPS.

Google Navigation gives most Android Os smartphone users free access to spoken, turn-by-turn directions. It is seen as a threat to services like TeleNav, a similar feature that charges customers a monthly fee. However, Google's is "bare bones" while pay-for options are more enhanced.

Android, iPhone, and More
The announcement also included a mention that this service is going to be available for other mobile devices, too. However, it's still unclear which ones will be given that option.

Google offers free versions of its mapping app for BlackBerry, Nokia S60, webOS and Windows Mobile, and they each could have a Navigation upgrade on the docket.

Available this Summer?
The announcement did not say when the iPhone version will be released. One strong possibility is this new service could be built into Apple iPhone OS 4.0, which means it could be available this summer.
